Witnessing a terrifying plane crash.
A man reading the newspaper on his porch near Lancaster Airport on Sunday morning witnessed a fatal plane crash. The man, identified as David Welden, recounted hearing an engine noise before seeing a cloud of black smoke. He immediately alerted his wife to call 911. The crash involved a single-engine Piper PA-46 that went down in a field close to the airport after takeoff, according to the FAA. Welden, joined by Amish neighbors, ventured to the crash site and described a scene with debris strewn across the field. Despite the absence of flames, they approached the crash site to offer assistance. Tragically, the pilot was found deceased. Although Welden acknowledged the distressing nature of the event, he commended emergency personnel for their constant dedication. This incident marks the second serious crash at Lancaster Airport this year, prompting questions about safety for nearby residents. Despite living in proximity to the airport, Welden expressed acceptance of the situation and praised the structural integrity of his 1875 timber-frame home as a place of safety.
