Wichita Police Department updates hospital suspect policy after fatal crash

Changes have been made to the Wichita Police Department's policies following an incident where a suspect was able to leave the hospital after causing a fatal crash that led to the death of a 14-year-old boy. The revised policies now have stricter oversight for hospitalized suspects arrested for serious offenses, including murder, attempted murder, rape, aggravated battery, sexual assault of a juvenile, or any case where the suspect is deemed a threat to public safety. The updated rules also mandate a guard to be placed on these suspects and require a mandatory review of all hospital guard decisions by high-ranking police officials. Additionally, suspects in felony DUI cases are now to be booked into jail when probable cause exists and a blood draw has been completed.
