Wichita native athlete Todric McGee dies in accident at home

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (KSNW) -- Missouri State University has announced the sudden death of Todric McGee, a senior safety on the Bears football team and a Wichita native. McGee died Friday from injuries believed to be caused by an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound. The 21-year-old was found late Friday morning at his apartment in Springfield. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he later died.  The Springfield Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. McGee was a graduate of Wichita Northwest High School and had become a leader on the Missouri State football team over five seasons, the college said in a statement. Known for his strong defensive play and work ethic, he earned second-team All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honors in 2023. Though his 2024 season was cut short by injury, he still managed 42 tackles, five pass deflections, and an interception in five games. “Todric was more than just a football player—he was a deeply respected teammate, student, and friend,” Missouri State head coach Ryan Beard said in a statement. “Our football family is heartbroken. We’re asking for privacy and prayers for his loved ones.”
