What to do if you're in a crash on Accident Alert
Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) has implemented Accident Alert status due to icy roads and reduced visibility. This status helps ease the workload of police departments during heavy traffic incidents by allowing drivers to report accidents later without facing penalties. Drivers typically need to report accidents immediately, but during bad weather conditions, police may switch to Accident Alert to manage the volume of calls. Certain types of accidents still require immediate reporting, such as those involving injuries or damage to public property. For incidents not falling under these criteria, drivers can exchange information, take photos, and later submit an online accident report to the Colorado Department of Revenue. These reports are not investigated by law enforcement and are solely kept for record-keeping purposes. To access a report, drivers can pay a fee and submit form 2489. It is important to still inform your insurance company promptly.
