West Sacramento's Vision Zero plan targets ending fatal crashes

West Sacramento has launched a initiative to reduce and ultimately eliminate fatal traffic accidents in the city over the next 25 years. Their goal is to decrease fatal and serious crashes by half in the next ten years as part of the Vision Zero Action Plan. City officials are seeking input from the community to help achieve these targets. Between 2017 and 2023, there were 29 fatalities and 117 serious injuries from traffic accidents in the city. The plan emphasizes the importance of preventing any traffic-related deaths, highlighting the devastating impact such incidents have on families and individuals involved. The city has identified West Capitol Avenue as a particularly hazardous road, with four intersections witnessing nine or more serious injury accidents during the specified time frame. The report reveals that the majority of fatal and serious injury crashes occur on a small percentage of West Sacramento streets. The plan pinpoints these high-risk areas and proposes various safety enhancements tailored to each location. It establishes objectives, strategies, and measures to enhance road safety for all. The draft plan is currently open for feedback from the public until August 22, and it will be reviewed at the city council meeting on September 17.
