Washington County teen flown to hospital after being hit on dirt bike has died
A teenager who was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital after being hit while riding a dirt bike in Washington County has died."I felt like it should have been me instead of him sometimes. Me and him were close, so it really did hurt more than anything," said Johnathan Gillespie's older sister, Jasmine. It was at the intersection of West Chestnut and Washington streets where 15-year-old Johnathan Gillespie was hit while riding his dirt bike Monday evening. It's the same intersection where his loved ones made a makeshift memorial to pray."It just hurts because now my son can’t grow up with his uncle," said Jasmine Gillespie. "Johnathan had so many plans with that boy. He loved my son to death."On Thursday night, Johnathan’s older sister confirmed to Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 that doctors declared him brain dead. Shortly before 10 p.m., he was declared dead. His organs were set to be recovered for donation on Friday."He died five minutes after we left to go back to the hotel room," Jasmine Gillespie said."Wished I had five minutes left with him," she said.Jasmine Gillespie told Pittsburgh's Action News 4 that as much as it hurts to see her brother gone, organ donation was an easy decision to make."Happy because it's helping someone live. I can't imagine anyone else going through what I'm going through," she said.Washington police say it was shortly after 6:30 p.m. Monday when they were called for a motor vehicle accident involving a juvenile on a dirt bike. That’s when they located Johnathan and the driver of that vehicle, who was attempting to render aid. The teen was eventually flown to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh."My heart aches. It aches a lot. I don’t believe it," said Talaijah Diamond, a friend. Now it’s the same area where his friends and family come back to, laying balloons, notes and flowers for Johnathan, who was affectionately known as "Bubba."Some of his friends said how they felt in the moments after learning about his accident."I felt lost, empty," said Diamond. And how they plan on remembering Johnathan."He was a good kid. His smile -- he would, like, turn around the room if it was bad," said Poland."An amazing friend. He was an amazing person. He was very loving, very caring. Just an amazing person," said Diamond.Washington police have not released information about the driver or the cause of the crash. They are asking any potential witnesses to come forward as the investigation continues.
