Warning from police: Scammers claim loved one in accident, needs legal help
The Cortland Police Department in Ohio is warning residents about a recent scam. In this scheme, scammers claim to be a family member who has been injured or arrested and then provide a phone number for an alleged attorney who asks for money. The impersonator may state they need bail money because the family member was in a car accident or got arrested, and provide a fake attorney's number to call. If the person falls for it, they will contact the false attorney, who will request $18,000 for bail under the pretense that the individual hit a federal agent in a nonexistent crash. The scammers will advise victims to tell the bank the money is for a vacation, not bail, to prevent the loved one's photo from being publicized. The most recent phone number being used is reportedly 346-404-3682 for someone claiming to be attorney Mike Richards. Remember to always verify with your local police department through an official township website or confirmed phone number.
