Virginia is the 4th highest in police chase-related fatal accidents in 2023: analysis.
Virginia ranks fourth in the nation for fatal crashes following police chases, based on data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for 2023. This translates to 21 out of 858 fatal crashes in the state being linked to police pursuits, totaling to 2.21% of all fatal crashes. Michael Kelly Personal Injury Lawyers conducted the research. Although there is no specific law requiring standardized pursuit policies in Virginia, officers are permitted to pursue individuals throughout the state and make arrests during close pursuit. As per NHTSA's April 2025 report, the United States experienced a 4.5% reduction in police-related fatal crashes, with Virginia observing a 9.2% drop in overall fatal crashes. However, non-fatal crashes surged by over 200,000 incidents in 2023, showing a 3.6% increase. NTHSA figures from 2023 to 2024 indicate a minor decline in total fatal crashes from 913 to 910.
