Air India confirmed that flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed near the airport, carrying 242 passengers and crew. Among the passengers were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 1 Canadian, and 7 Portuguese nationals. The city's police commissioner reported that 204 bodies were recovered at the crash site. The flight made a distress call shortly after takeoff and lost communication, with the plane descending quickly at a rate of -475 feet per minute. The captain had 8,200 hours of flying experience while the co-pilot had 1,100 hours. This devastating incident marks the first major crash in India since 2020.
