Video captures freight train colliding with car containing 84-year-old on Massachusetts tracks

A recently released security footage captures the moment an 84-year-old driver was struck by a freight train as she stopped her car on the tracks in Andover, Massachusetts. The video shows the Lexus vehicle attempting to pass under the closing crossing gate at Essex Street, with witnesses reporting that they heard the train sounding its horn. Business owner Mark Spencer, who captured the incident on his surveillance camera, described how the woman's car was hit by the approaching train, spinning it around before being dragged and wrapped around a bollard. The woman had disregarded the warning signals and safety measures at the tracks, according to Transit Police. Fortunately, firefighters were able to rescue the woman, who escaped unharmed despite the severity of the collision. The town recognizes the intersection of Essex and Peabody Street as a notorious crash-prone area, prompting plans for a construction project funded by a $3.3 million grant aimed at enhancing safety and traffic flow. State Sen. Barry Finegold intends to implement measures within the next two years to mitigate accidents at the intersection.
