Victim of fiery Aurora crash recovering in hospital, hopes safety changes are made
AURORA, Colo. (KDVR) — The driver of the vehicle that was hit by a car going nearly 100 miles per hour in Aurora on Monday night is speaking from her hospital bed, saying she wants to see people ease off the gas in that intersection. 63-year-old Irma Herrera says she didn’t see anything out of the ordinary when she came through the intersection at Alameda Parkway and Buckley Road on Monday. In fact, she says she had no idea how she even ended up at the Medical Center of Aurora. “I saw the green light and then I woke up in the emergency room," said Herrera. She was unaware that a Tesla that police say was driving 97 miles per hour in a 40 mph zone had crashed into her. “People had to tell me what had happened because I had no recollection," said Herrera. In the car with her were five other people: Her daughter and grandkids. Herrera absorbed the worst of the impact. “I have a broken ankle. I had a bleed in my brain, two different places," she said. Bruised from her knees to her face, she hasn’t been able to stand since the accident. But she’s thankful it was her instead of her family. “So relieved," she said. "So relieved.” Herrera said she drives through the intersection often. "There’s always a wreck. Every other day there’s a wreck," said Herrera. “Never thought it would be me.” And she says she almost always sees speeders. “It's so easy to step on the gas because there’s no lights," said Herrera. "It’s just an open road, you know?” She hopes this wreck leads to change. “I do think that maybe there should be some kind of caution lights, stop lights in between," said Herrera. And while her road to recovery is set to be a long one, she’s thankful to at least have the opportunity. “This is a big, big miracle," said Herrera. "I know that the lord has his hands over me and my family.” Herrera said after her stay at the hospital, she’ll be transferred to a rehab facility where she hopes she’ll be able to get back on her feet again soon. Her daughter has set up a GoFundMe to help with medical costs, which you can find here. The driver of the Tesla who was killed has been identified as Rohan Biswas, 26.
