Vermont woman killed following DUI crash; driver charged, police say

A Vermont teen is facing several charges after a crash led to the death of his passenger on Thursday morning.The Addison County Sheriff's Department said 16-year-old Brayden Hemingway of Waltham crashed his vehicle on North Street in New Haven after he noticed that a sheriff's deputy was following him.According to police, Hemingway was under suspension and not supposed to be operating a motor vehicle at the time of the crash. After noticing that the deputy was following him, he allegedly began driving at a high rate of speed to avoid police and crashed, causing the car to flip over into a ditch.During the crash, his 20-year-old passenger, Jaida Cram, of Bristol, was ejected and suffered critical injuries. Officials confirmed that Cram was dating Hemingway at the time o of the crash. The deputy performed first aid on Cram until first responders arrived, and she was transported by ambulance to the University of Vermont Medical Center, where she was later pronounced dead.Hemingway was arrested, and police determined that he was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the crash. The Addison County State's Attorney's Office is charging Hemingway as an adult in the incident. He was ordered being held without bail on charges of grossly negligent operation with death resulting, DUI with death resulting, and second-degree homicide pending his arraignment.Hemingway appeared in court on Friday afternoon and pleaded not guilty to the charges. His attorney argued against him remaining behind bars, saying he would not due well in a correctional facility due to his age.The judge set bail at $25,000 but said Hemingway could be released if he posted 10%, or $2,500. Another court date has not yet been set.
