Vehicle ignites after Nipomo collision, causing Hwy 101 traffic delays

A driver was taken to the hospital following a crash off Highway 101 in Nipomo on Friday afternoon. The incident occurred on the northbound lanes, north of W. Tefft Street at approximately 1 p.m., prompting emergency crews to respond. The vehicle caught fire after firefighters cleared the scene, with the flames spreading to nearby vegetation in a eucalyptus grove, scorching about 1/8 of an acre. A photo from CAL FIRE SLO shows the vehicle seemingly hitting a tree. The driver's injuries are not yet fully known. Traffic is moving slowly in both directions on the highway, and there was another collision reported in the area around 3:30 p.m., though it is unclear if it is related to the traffic backup. Motorists are advised to steer clear of the area if possible. Fire crews anticipate staying at the site throughout the evening for cleanup as they reorganize battalions in the San Luis Obispo and Nipomo regions.WATCH: CAL FIRE reorganizing battalions in San Luis Obispo and Nipomo areas
