USC student, 21, dies in hit-and-run by undocumented immigrant: DHS

A university student was tragically killed in a hit-and-run near the University of South Carolina campus involving an undocumented immigrant from El Salvador, as reported by Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials. Tricia McLaughlin, DHS assistant secretary for public affairs, conveyed in a recent post the driver's illegal status and expressed condolences for the victim, 21-year-old Nathaniel "Nate" G. Baker. The driver, Rosali I. Fernandez-Cruz, faces charges related to the incident. Fernandez-Cruz had a past interaction with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and was ordered to be deported in 2018. The collision occurred when Fernandez-Cruz allegedly failed to yield the right of way, resulting in Baker's death. Baker, a business student from Virginia, was sadly pronounced dead at the hospital. The fraternity to which Baker belonged, Phi Gamma Delta, paid tribute to him in a touching post, highlighting his positive impact. The university and Greek community extended their sympathies and support to Baker's loved ones during this difficult time. Fernandez-Cruz is currently in custody, and details from authorities are pending.
