US suspends foreign trucker visas after deadly accident
The US has halted the issuance of all worker visas for commercial truck drivers with immediate effect, as announced by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This decision was made to address safety issues and to safeguard American jobs. Rubio expressed concerns about the rising number of foreign drivers operating large truck vehicles in the US, stating that it poses risks to American lives and impacts the livelihoods of American truckers. This action aligns with President Donald Trump's efforts to strengthen the enforcement of regulations governing foreign truck drivers. Following a recent fatal crash in Florida involving a foreign truck driver, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that an investigation has been launched by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. The driver, Harjinder Singh, an Indian national, lacked English proficiency and legal authorization to work in the US. Singh is facing charges related to the incident and has been returned to Florida for prosecution. Duffy emphasized the importance of enforcing driver qualification standards to prevent safety hazards and reduce the likelihood of accidents.
