UPS and FedEx ground MD-11 planes post fatal Kentucky incident
UPS and FedEx have chosen to temporarily halt the use of their McDonnell Douglas MD-11 aircraft in light of a recent tragic crash at the UPS global aviation hub in Kentucky. The crash resulted in the loss of 14 lives, including the three pilots onboard the MD-11 plane. Both companies have decided to ground these aircraft "out of an abundance of caution," as a safety measure recommended by the aircraft manufacturer. The MD-11 planes constitute about 9% of the UPS airline fleet and 4% of the FedEx fleet. UPS emphasized that the safety of their employees and the communities they serve is their top priority in making this decision. Boeing, the manufacturer associated with McDonnell Douglas, supported the grounding as a precautionary step while further engineering analysis is conducted following the tragic incident. Flight records indicate that the UPS MD-11 involved in the crash underwent maintenance in San Antonio, Texas, prior to the incident. The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and it might take several months before the findings are made public. UPS Worldport operations have resumed partially, with a focus on Next Day Air services.
