Update on deadly crash by Joplin Police Dept.
The Joplin Police Department recently provided an update on a tragic incident that took place at the intersection of 20th & Schifferdecker on September 8th at 7:44 a.m. According to the Joplin Police Department's Major Crash Team investigation, a passenger vehicle was waiting at a red light in the left turn lane at the intersection, intending to turn eastbound onto 20th Street. When the light changed, a green arrow was displayed for southbound traffic to turn left, while a solid green light was shown for all southbound vehicles. Conversely, the northbound traffic signal remained red. Sadly, as the passenger vehicle made the turn, a northbound motorcycle disregarded the red light and collided with the vehicle. The motorcyclist was severely injured and was rushed to a local hospital, where he eventually passed away. He was identified as 18-year-old Nikolas O. Jones from Garden City, Missouri. The driver of the passenger vehicle did not sustain any injuries. The primary factors contributing to the accident were the motorcyclist failing to stop at the red light and excessive speed. The case remains under investigation by the Joplin Police Department’s Major Crash Team.
