Update: Grand Rapids child dies after head-on crash in northern Michigan
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Grand Rapids child involved in a head-on crash over the weekend has died. St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School confirmed the child’s passing in a letter to the school community Tuesday night. The Marco family was involved in the crash around 3:30 p.m. Sunday on US-131 near Day Road in Kalkaska County. Investigators with the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office say a 19-year-old from Bellaire was heading northbound when they “abruptly” tried to pass a car trying to make a left turn. The driver cut into the southbound lane, striking the Marcos’ SUV head-on. All seven people involved in the crash were taken to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Two children, a 7-year-old and a 5-year-old, were eventually transferred to Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids for more treatment. The 5-year-old was listed in critical condition with “life-threatening injuries.” “There are no words to adequately describe what I am about to write,” St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School principal Michelle Morrow said in a letter. “Father Jake was able to celebrate mass with the family beforehand which is a testament to the Marco’s unwavering faith.” The letter identified the child as Baylor, a kindergartener, who “always had a twinkle in his eye.” The local Catholic community is rallying around the Marco family, holding prayer services throughout the week and launching a GoFundMe campaign that has raised more than $75,000 as of Wednesday morning. The crash investigation remains open, although police do not believe drugs or alcohol were a factor.
