Two dead, including teen, in Carroll County crash; tractor driver charged

A crash late Monday night in Carroll County left two people dead and another injured.According to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol, a Hyundai Santa Fe driven by Elvin Ariel Murillo Castro, 17, of Carroll, was northbound on Hawthorne Avenue at around 10:30 p.m. Monday.A John Deere tractor operated by Troy Bluml, 51, was eastbound on 220th Street and failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Hawthorne Avenue, according to the crash report.The crash report indicates the tractor struck the driver's side of the Hyundai, killing Murillo Castro and one passenger, Pedro Castro, 56, of Carroll. Another passenger was taken by helicopter to a Des Moines hospital.Bluml left the scene, according to the Iowa State Patrol. He and the tractor allegedly involved in the crash were both found at his residence later.Bluml was arrested and charged with knowingly leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death, which is a Class C felony.According to the latest data from the Iowa Department of Transportation, 61 people have died so far this year on Iowa roads. That number is 3 fewer than at the same point in 2024.
