Twin sentenced to 4 years for allegedly persuading sister to take blame for fatal Amish buggy crash

A woman from Minnesota was sentenced this week to four years in state prison after being found guilty of her involvement in a fatal SUV crash into an Amish buggy in 2023. Samantha Peterson, the driver of the vehicle, was also ordered to pay nearly $40,000 in restitution, according to Minnesota District Court Judge Jeremy Clinefelter. Peterson had pleaded guilty to charges of criminal vehicular homicide and criminal vehicular operation under the influence. Judge Clinefelter decreed that the two-year and four-year sentences for the offenses be served simultaneously. The incident, which took place in Spring Valley, resulted in the tragic deaths of two children in the buggy. Authorities uncovered that Peterson was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the crash. She had initially tried to shift blame to her twin sister, Sarah, but evidence pointed to Samantha as the actual driver. Sheriff John DeGeorge emphasized the need for caution on the road, where there are signs warning drivers about slow-moving buggies. Samantha expressed regret and acknowledged the impact of her actions on the victims' family at her sentencing. Sarah had also faced charges and served her sentence related to the incident earlier in 2024.
