Truck driver charged in I-35 accident that resulted in 5 deaths
A grand jury in Travis County has indicted the driver of a semi-truck involved in a fatal crash on Interstate 35 earlier this year, which resulted in the death of five individuals, including a family of four. Solomon Weldekeal Araya is facing charges of manslaughter for the four fatalities and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for the 17 victims who were injured in the accident. Initially, Weldekeal Araya was charged with driving under the influence, but tests later revealed he was not intoxicated during the crash. The indictment states that Weldekeal Araya was reckless in his actions, which included driving at an unsafe speed, disregarding traffic signs, changing lanes in an unsafe manner, not taking appropriate action, failing to brake and maintain proper vigilance. In response to the indictment, Bristol Myers, Weldekeal Araya's representative, claimed that law enforcement initially suggested he was impaired, but subsequent tests disproved this. Myers criticized the decision to pursue further testing and accused authorities of attempting to wrongly incriminate his client for what he views as a tragic accident.
