Truck driver accused in deadly crash back in Florida; Rubio halts commercial driver visas
A truck driver accused of causing a fatal crash by making an illegal U-turn has been brought back to Florida, according to authorities. The driver, Harjinder Singh, 28, who is not a U.S. citizen and entered the country illegally from Mexico in 2018, was returned to Florida from California. The U.S. Marshals Service reported that Singh obtained a commercial driver's license in California. Florida Lt. Gov. Jay Collins personally accompanied Singh on his return to Fort Pierce. The St. Lucie County Sheriff, Richard Del Toro, commented on the dangers of making such U-turns, emphasizing the potential risks at high speeds. Governor Ron DeSantis raised concerns about Singh's English proficiency impacting his ability to operate a commercial vehicle effectively. Response to the incident also includes Secretary of State Marco Rubio's announcement on pausing worker visas for commercial truck drivers. The American Trucking Association highlights a shortage of approximately 60,000 drivers nationwide. Al Hanley, from The CDL School, mentioned that the industry may see increased value in current U.S. drivers due to the visa pause. The investigation into the crash that resulted in three fatalities continues, with the U.S. Department of Transportation looking into the driver, the accident, and the company for which Singh worked.
