
Troopers investigate after deputy dies in head-on crash while on duty; community mourns
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating after a deputy died in a head-on collision.Troopers said the crash happened around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 301 near Blackwells Farm Road in Effingham.According to Highway Patrol, the deputy was traveling north on Hwy 301 and an SUV was traveling south when the two vehicles collided.Officials said both the deputy and the driver of the SUV were hospitalized.On Wednesday, the Florence County Sheriff's Office confirmed Deputy Nathaniel “Nate” Ansay died following the crash.Deputies confirmed that Ansay was on duty at the time of the accident.The 24-year-old deputy joined the Florence County Sheriff's Office on Oct. 30, 2023. Ansay graduated from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy as a Class 1 officer on March 15, 2024."Nate never met a stranger and always had a huge smile on his face," Florence County Sheriff T.J. Joye said. "He told me often how much he loved being a deputy. He will be greatly missed."As of Wednesday, funeral arrangements are incomplete, but more information will be released as it becomes available.Since the crash, many surrounding agencies have expressed their condolences to FCSO:
