Trial Date Set for Lawsuit Against Tesla over Fatal Crash Involving Elon Musk
The lawsuit against Tesla Inc. TSLA regarding a fatal car crash involving its Model S has not been dismissed, as a judge's ruling allows for a potential trial to proceed. The decision by Federal Judge Beth Bloom in Miami permits the estate of Naibel Benavides Leon and her former boyfriend, Dillon Angulo, to move forward with their claims against Tesla for design flaws and failure to provide adequate warnings. The lawsuit stems from an April 2019 incident in Key Largo, Florida, where a Tesla Model S with Autopilot collided with the victims' parked Chevrolet Tahoe. Along with seeking punitive damages, the plaintiffs now have a trial set for July 14. Tesla, headquartered in Austin, Texas, has faced ongoing safety concerns regarding its self-driving technology, emphasizing that its autopilot features are intended for attentive drivers and not for fully autonomous driving. Recent regulatory questions surrounded the safety of Tesla's self-driving technology, notably in challenging weather conditions, as the company planned to roll out its Robotaxi service in Austin, Texas. Another wrongful death lawsuit was filed against Tesla in New Jersey over a 2024 crash involving a Model S claiming the lives of three individuals, citing the car's allegedly defective design. Tesla's stock closed down 0.66% for the day at $323.63, with a 0.28% decrease in after-hours trading to $322.71. Tesla stock has shown positive momentum ranking 78th percentile according to Benzinga's Edge Stock Rankings.
