Trial begins for Norfolk Police accused of falsifying accident report.
A federal jury in Norfolk, Virginia is currently hearing a lawsuit where Brandon Williams is accusing multiple Norfolk Police officers of falsifying an accident report in 2020 as part of a retaliation effort against him. Williams initially sued for about $4.6 million, alleging that officers conspired to downplay the seriousness of a car accident he was in to prevent him from seeking compensation for his injuries. Although Williams later sued and reached a settlement with the other driver for over a million dollars, he also claimed that the officers intentionally caused him emotional distress. In addition, there have been revelations of political connections to the case. The plaintiff's case concluded recently after Williams testified. The accident in question occurred on Sept. 30, 2020 on a bridge in Norfolk. The lawsuit claims that the other driver involved was speeding and intoxicated when they collided with Williams' car, but the police report cited a lower speed for the driver. Sergeant Michelle Mitchell, one of the officers named in the suit, acknowledged errors can occur in accident reports but Williams alleges a conspiracy based on statements made by officers at the scene. The trial is expected to end on Monday.
