Trial ahead for ex-Warren cop in deadly 2024 crash
The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office announced on Friday that James Burke, a former Warren police officer facing charges related to a fatal crash in September 2024, will proceed to trial. Burke, 29, faces multiple charges including two counts of manslaughter with a motor vehicle and one count of willful neglect of duty for his involvement in the collision that resulted in the deaths of Cedric Hayden Jr. and DeJuan Pettis. The incident occurred when Burke's patrol car crashed into a Dodge Durango while allegedly speeding without emergency lights or sirens. Following a preliminary hearing, Judge John M. Chmura decided to move the case to the Macomb County Circuit Court. The trial is set for September 2, and if convicted, Burke could face a maximum prison sentence of just over 31 years. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable under the law, expressing sympathy for the families affected by the tragic loss.
