
Train collision with asphalt truck causes minor spill in Emerson
Officials spent Thursday afternoon cleaning up after a train struck a hot liquid asphalt truck, which had gotten stuck on the tracks.It happened around 1:14 p.m. at the railroad crossing at Highway 293 and Gaston Westbrook Avenue in Emerson, across the street from Emerson City Hall.According to Bartow County Fire and Emergency Services, only a small amount of non-flammable liquid asphalt spilled as a result of the crash.Floyd Muncy, of West Virginia, was identified by Emerson Police as the driver. He was out of the truck at the time of the crash and was uninjured. Those on the train also were not injured, according to CSX.Muncy was cited for failure to obey a traffic control device and failure to obey railroad grade crossing restrictions."The officer immediately requested 911 to inform CSX about the situation and halt any trains approaching the crossing," a statement from Emerson Police read. "About three minutes after officers arrived, a northbound train collided with the passenger side of the tractor."The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
