Tragic school bus crash in Sussex; parents advocate for change with video
A new video has been released providing insight into the events leading up to a tragic bus crash in January that resulted in the death of a 5-year-old boy from the Hamilton School District. The child, Finn Katona, passed away on the first day back from winter break when he was transferring from his school bus at Silver Spring Intermediate School. His parents, Zach and Ally Katona, have brought attention to the video, expressing concerns about what they describe as a chaotic bus transfer process. The video captures Finn walking among numerous students near moving buses on what his parents called a hazardous "concrete island." Despite the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department concluding that Finn's death was accidental, his parents stress that there are accountability issues with both the school district and the bus company. They emphasize that this incident was not merely a "freak accident," highlighting the unsafe environment in which the tragedy occurred. Finn’s family hopes that sharing the video will prompt changes to prevent similar incidents in the future. The school district has chosen not to comment, and the bus company has not responded to the concerns raised. The Katona family is grateful for the community's support but deeply misses their son, describing Finn as a beloved young soul who brought joy to their lives. They urge parents to advocate for the safety of their children within the school transportation system.
