Tragic drowning of fisheries employee in research incident

Law enforcement officials, including deputies from the Carteret County Sheriff's Office, officers from the NC Marine Patrol, and NC Wildlife authorities, were dispatched to an emergency situation at Turnagain Bay in Sea Level. This incident involved a civilian employee of the NC Division of Marine Fisheries, identified as James Mark Hamric, 52, from Atlantic Beach. While collecting water samples for research, Hamric and his colleagues experienced their boat drifting away. Hamric attempted to swim towards the boat wearing waders but tragically went underwater in the process. His colleagues promptly retrieved him from the water and administered CPR until emergency responders arrived on the scene. Despite efforts, Mr. Hamric could not be revived. The authorities are currently investigating the incident, with no suspicion of foul play.
