Tragic crash claims 8 lives, including Missouri family and two Oklahoma teens

Eight people tragically lost their lives in a collision near U.S. Highway 169 in Franklin County, as reported by the Kansas Highway Patrol. The crash involved a GMC Yukon XL and a Subaru Legacy heading in opposite directions on the highway. The GMC attempted to pass a slower vehicle, leading to a head-on collision with the Subaru at mile marker 111.1 around 5:43 p.m. The crash report indicates both drivers tried to veer onto the shoulder to avoid impact, resulting in the collision. Among those who lost their lives were individuals from the Subaru and GMC, while a 15-year-old from Oklahoma is the sole survivor and is currently receiving medical care. The Franklin County Sheriff's Office confirmed the crash site as near U.S. 169 and Virginia Road, prompting the closure of the highway section between Anderson and Miami counties for investigation. Describing the area as hazardous due to speeding vehicles, a nearby resident highlighted the need for caution. Among the casualties were Donald "DJ" Laster from Tulsa Public Schools, along with a former coach and a transportation team member who were all returning from a basketball tournament. The tragedy has deeply impacted the school community, with tributes and condolences pouring in from educators and officials. Union Public Schools also mourned the loss of a ninth-grade student involved in the crash, offering support services for those affected.
