Tragedy strikes as five perish in helicopter crash on Africa's tallest peak
Tragically, a helicopter crashed on Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak, in northern Tanzania resulting in the death of five individuals. The incident occurred during a medical evacuation mission to rescue patients along a popular climbing route. The victims included two foreign nationals awaiting evacuation, a local doctor, a tour guide, and the pilot. The crash took place between Barafu Camp and Kibo Summit at an altitude exceeding 4,000 metres (13,100ft). The helicopter was operated by Kilimanjaro Aviation, a company specializing in medical evacuation and aviation services. While the company has not yet released a statement concerning the accident, authorities have initiated an investigation to ascertain the cause of the crash in accordance with international aviation safety protocols. This tragic event is a rare occurrence on Mount Kilimanjaro, with the last reported aircraft incident taking place in November 2008, resulting in the loss of four lives.
