Tragedy in Ha Long Bay: More than 30 killed in tourist boat capsize

Tragedy struck Ha Long Bay in Vietnam when a tourist boat, carrying 48 passengers and five crew members, capsized due to sudden heavy rain. State media reported that at least 28 individuals lost their lives, with more than a dozen still missing. Among those onboard were families visiting from Hanoi, including over 20 children. Border guards managed to rescue 12 individuals and recover 18 bodies, with search operations ongoing. Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh extended condolences to the victims' families and directed defense and public security ministries to conduct urgent search and rescue efforts. The government pledged to investigate the incident and address any accountable parties. The storm that led to the tragedy struck suddenly, with residents recounting hailstones, heavy rain, and thunderstorms. This tragic event occurred after days of extreme heat in the region, not connected to Tropical Storm Wipha in the South China Sea. Ha Long Bay, known for its scenic beauty, faces challenges with inclement weather, as evidenced by previous incidents like numerous boat sinkings in the area.
