Tragedy in Erie: One child deceased, one child missing in train incident
In Erie, Kansas, a tragic incident occurred where one child lost their life and another is missing after they were unable to escape from an oncoming train on a railway bridge. The Neosho County Sheriff’s Office was alerted by Union Pacific Railroad around 12:39 p.m. regarding the incident near 115th Road. Responding to the scene were emergency crews from the sheriff’s office, EMS, Erie and St. Paul fire departments, and Union Pacific. Tragically, one young male was discovered deceased. The search for the other child began promptly using various resources like drones, boats, a helicopter, and search dogs, with assistance from the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, the Kansas Highway Patrol, and local volunteers. After examining engine camera footage and physical evidence, it was determined that the children were unable to escape the approaching train while on the bridge. In light of the hazardous conditions caused by high water and debris in the Neosho River, the recovery efforts had to be postponed until the following day. Sheriff Greg Taylor expressed deep sorrow, stating, “This is a very sad tragedy for everyone involved and our community.”
