
Tragedy in Brazil: 8 killed and 13 injured in hot-air balloon mishap
Praia Grande is a popular spot in southern Brazil for hot-air ballooning, known for its stunning canyon landscapes and referred to as the “Brazilian Cappadocia.” Unfortunately, on June 21, 2025, a tragic accident occurred when a hot-air balloon caught fire and plunged to the ground. Local news footage captured the chaotic scene as the balloon, carrying 21 passengers, including the pilot, descended in flames. While 13 individuals, including the pilot, managed to escape, eight were unable to do so, resulting in a devastating loss of life. The incident has prompted mourning and sorrow among officials and the community. The state authorities have launched an investigation into the accident, aiming to uncover the cause within 30 days. It has been revealed that the balloon's flight was supposed to last 45 minutes, reaching a height of 1,000 meters, with each passenger paying approximately $100. The company responsible for the balloon, Sobrevoar, expressed deep regret over the tragedy, emphasizing their adherence to safety protocols and previous incident-free operations. As a result of the accident, Sobrevoar announced the suspension of all activities indefinitely.
