Tragedy as 3 children die in an accident involving an Amish buggy on the way to school

Three young siblings tragically lost their lives this week in a heartbreaking incident near Bremen, Indiana. The children, aged 9, 10, and 13, were on their way to school in an Amish buggy when a 17-year-old driving an SUV crashed into them from the back, causing the children to be ejected from the buggy and killed instantly. The driver of the SUV was unharmed. Charges against the driver are yet to be determined. Indiana is home to a significant Amish community, with over 63,000 residents as of 2024. A recent study by Purdue University highlighted a growing concern of accidents involving buggies due to the disproportionate number of fatalities compared to motor vehicle incidents. Attorney Dan Armstrong also pointed out the lack of safety features in Amish buggies, making crashes involving them particularly dangerous. There is currently no age requirement for operating a horse-drawn vehicle in Indiana, raising concerns about road safety in such situations.
