Traffic snarled after fatal collision on 5 Freeway near downtown L.A.

A fatal collision that may have involved a pedestrian caused major delays on the 5 Freeway near downtown Los Angeles during Monday morning’s commute. The incident was reported around 3:50 a.m. on the southbound side of the freeway just north of Main Street in the Lincoln Heights area, according to the California Highway Patrol. KTLA video showed a coroner’s van from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner at the scene, along with emergency personnel. One person, believed to have been walking on the freeway, was pronounced dead at the scene. A SigAlert closing all southbound lanes was issued just before 4 a.m. Two lanes remained closed, with one reopening to traffic around 4:45 a.m., according to CHP. Heavy delays were reported on the southbound side of the freeway as the investigation continued. All lanes reopened shortly before 7 a.m. No further details about what led up to the crash were immediately available.
