TRAFFIC ALERT: Inbound Edens Expressway shut down at Touhy Ave. after fatal crash involving semi and vehicle
SKOKIE, Ill. — A fatal, fiery crash in which a semi-truck rolled over has shut down the inbound lanes of the Edens Expressway at the Touhy Avenue exit in the north suburbs early Tuesday morning. All traffic is being diverted off the expressway onto westbound Touhy Ave. However, traffic can re-enter the expressway via the on-ramp from eastbound Touhy Ave., and the Touhy Ave. bridge has reopened in both directions. According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened just before 4 a.m. Tuesday when a semi overturned and caught fire. Officials have not yet determined what caused that to happen. The semi caught fire just under the Touhy Ave. bridge, with video showing crews extinguishing hot spots. ISP says one person was taken to an area hospital with injuries and a second person died from the injuries they sustained in the crash. Firefighters, ISP and the Illinois Department of Transportation are on the scene early Tuesday morning, along with multiple tow trucks. ISP has not confirmed when lanes will reopen, but they are likely to be closed until later Tuesday morning as officials investigate and crews continue to cleanup debris. This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
