TMI Accident: 46 years ago today

DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHTM)-- Today is the 46th anniversary of the worst nuclear disaster in American history. On March 28, 1979, the Unit 2 reactor at Three Mile Island in Dauphin County partially melted down, causing dangerous radioactive gases to be released into the air. The event, which was the result of both human and mechanical failures, resulted in the evacuation of around 140,000 people. TMI was deactivated in 2019. A plan to finish the demolition and start the clean of Unit 2 by 2052 is underway, and a restart of TMI Unit 1, which Constellation Energy owns, was announced in September 2024.
