Three-car collision causes fire, explosion at Herriman Plaza.

In Herriman, Utah, cleanup efforts are currently in progress following a three-car accident that resulted in a fire and explosion at a strip mall late Saturday night. Riverton City representative Josh Lee reported that emergency crews were summoned to the mall near the intersection of 5200 West and 13400 South at approximately 10:15 p.m. in response to the accident. One of the vehicles involved collided with the building. The drivers included a 70-year-old female and a 72-year-old male in the first vehicle, a teenage driver with a learner's permit and multiple passengers in the second vehicle, and a single 26-year-old male in the third vehicle. While all three drivers were hospitalized for various injuries, the conditions of the other occupants remain unknown. Fortunately, all individuals were able to exit the building before the explosion occurred, shortly after one of the vehicles crashed into it. An investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash. Due to a gas leak caused by the incident, parts of the area were evacuated; however, the gas has been shut off at the impacted structure, and all evacuation orders were lifted by 1 a.m. A section of 13400 South from 5000 West to 5600 West will remain closed overnight as crews conduct their inquiry and clean up the scene. Herriman City Mayor Lorin Palmer released a statement regarding the occurrence.
