Tesla ordered to pay damages for fatal crash.

A Miami jury recently found Tesla partially responsible for a 2019 tragic accident involving its Autopilot system, ruling that the company must pay over $242 million in damages to the victims. The relatives of Naibel Benavides Leon and Dillon Angulo were awarded a total of $329 million in damages—$129 million for compensatory damages and $200 million for punitive damages. The court decided that Tesla should cover 33% of the compensatory damages, totaling $42.6 million, in addition to the full amount of punitive damages. Tesla contested the ruling, stating that any punitive damages would be limited to three times the compensatory award, making their maximum liability $170 million. The driver involved in the accident was found to be 67% responsible, but as a defendant, will not be liable for damages. Tesla plans to challenge the jury's decision, arguing that the driver was entirely at fault due to speeding, distraction, and overriding the Autopilot system. This lawsuit is among several legal challenges Tesla has faced regarding its self-driving technology.
