Tesla collides with California Highway Patrol officer on Interstate 280 in Palo Alto
In Palo Alto on Monday afternoon, a new 2026 Tesla Model Y collided with a California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer who was conducting a traffic break on Interstate-280. The officer had stopped traffic to address a hazard caused by an electric leaf blower on the southbound side near Page Mill Road. The Tesla driver failed to yield, leading to a collision that caused the officer to be ejected from his motorcycle and sustain major but non-life-threatening injuries. The officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The Tesla driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with authorities. The CHP Golden Gate Division's Accident Investigation Team is investigating whether the Tesla's Advanced Driver Assistance Systems played a role in the incident. To facilitate the investigation, three southbound lanes of I-280 near Alpine Road were closed for several hours.
