Teenager in stolen vehicle causes deadly accident fleeing Roseville police

A young driver who was reportedly escaping authorities in Roseville led police on a pursuit into Warren early Saturday morning. Tragically, he ran a red light and collided with a vehicle, resulting in the death of an innocent Uber driver who has been identified as 28-year-old Alex Habib. Roseville police initiated the chase following a stolen Hyundai Sonata report. The pursuit began around 2:40 a.m. when officers attempted to stop the stolen car near I-94 and Gratiot, but the driver evaded them. The chase continued onto westbound I-696, exiting at Hoover and proceeding along 11 Mile until the fatal collision occurred at Van Dyke. Habib, a father of two from Madison Heights, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. The 16-year-old Detroit boy driving the stolen vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was later taken into custody. Roseville authorities suspect the teen is connected to a theft ring focusing on Macomb County residents. This incident marks the second time within days that a police pursuit involving teenagers in a stolen vehicle has ended in a crash. In a separate event last Wednesday, Warren police were chasing a stolen Kia occupied by four juvenile suspects that crashed into a Hazel Park restaurant, Brayz. Investigations are ongoing, with Warren police handling the crash inquiry and Roseville Police Department internally reviewing the pursuit. Charges against the teenage driver are anticipated. Habib is remembered fondly as a kind father who brought joy to others around him. He is survived by his wife and children.
