Teen who fell asleep at the wheel caused deadly crash, Oregon officials say

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One person died and another was seriously injured after a crash involving a teen driver who fell asleep at the wheel, officials said. The crash happened in Clackamas County on Highway 26 near milepost 28 on Thursday, April 30, just before 7:30 p.m., the Oregon State Police said. Officials said 18-year-old Wyatt Branchley Beers, of Whitefish, Montana, fell asleep behind the wheel of a gold Toyota Tacoma, crossing from his eastbound lane on Highway 26 near Sandy into the westbound lane and crashing into a blue Subaru Outback. The passenger of the Subarau, 42-year-old Christopher James Hamre, of Redmond, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Subaru, 45-year-old Redmond resident Sally Caitlin West, was life-flighted to the hospital with serious injuries. Beers, who was not injured, remained on the scene and cooperated with the investigation, OSP said. The crash impacted the highway for about three hours while the investigation took place.
