Teen undocumented immigrant who caused fatal Colorado accident receives probation, then detained by ICE with relatives

A teenager, who is an unauthorized immigrant and was convicted of causing a fatal crash that resulted in the death of a woman in Colorado, along with his family, was recently taken into custody by immigration authorities. The 16-year-old, originally from Colombia, was given probation and community service for the incident in July 2024, where he struck a plea deal with prosecutors for the death of Kaitlyn Weaver. Named due to laws protecting the privacy of minor offenders, he and his family were arrested on May 20 by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for living in the United States unlawfully. An ICE representative mentioned that the minor was sentenced in Colorado and is in custody awaiting an immigration hearing. The victim, Weaver, passed away after being hit by the teen while parked at a stop sign; she later succumbed to her injuries after being taken off life support. Following the tragic event, ICE detained the teen and his family, initiating a process for possible removal from the country. Weaver's father, John Weaver, expressed gratitude for the support received and the enforcement actions taken. The teen had faced vehicular homicide charges initially but was offered a plea deal later on. Weaver's family attorney criticized the leniency of the deal, pointing out the loss of a young life and raising concerns about the collision between immigration and criminal justice systems. The teen's asylum claim is pending, with ICE specifying that such claims don't exempt individuals from detention.
