Teen sentenced for 2023 crash that killed woman & unborn child
An 18-year-old teenager named Travion Smith was sentenced to 25-50 years in prison on Tuesday after being found guilty of second-degree murder and other charges for causing a fatal crash while fleeing from police. The incident occurred on the night of August 12, 2023, when Smith crashed into a vehicle carrying Norman Gumma, his pregnant wife, Fatih, and their young son. Fatih was killed in the crash and Norman was left paralyzed, while their young son suffered injuries but recovered. Prosecutors stated that Smith was driving at speeds exceeding 90 mph at the time of the crash. This tragic event resulted in devastating consequences for the Gumma family. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido emphasized the grave repercussions of reckless actions like fleeing from law enforcement and highlighted the importance of accountability and justice in such cases. A GoFundMe page has been set up by the family to help with their expenses, and donations are still being accepted.
