Travion Smith, who was 18 years old, was convicted of multiple charges including causing the death of a pregnant woman and her unborn child, reckless driving resulting in injuries, and fleeing from police. Prosecutors stated that Smith, who was 16 at the time of the incident, led police on a high-speed chase that resulted in a collision with a vehicle carrying Faith Gumma, her husband, and their young son. The crash led to the death of Faith Gumma and her unborn child, while her husband was left paralyzed. The prosecutor, Peter J. Lucido, emphasized the need for stricter consequences for drivers who evade law enforcement, stressing the importance of protecting innocent lives. Smith's sentencing is scheduled for August 26.
