Teen driver tried as adult after crash kills high school football player

In a tragic event that claimed the life of Hamilton Southeastern football player Mason Alexander, an 18-year-old, Mason Alexander, has been ruled to be tried as an adult by a Hamilton County judge for reckless homicide stemming from a fatal crash. The incident took place nearly three months ago when the vehicle, in which Alexander was a passenger, veered off the road, collided with a tree, and caught fire in a devastating accident on Florida Road. The victim's uncle, Rahvy Murray, expressed the family's grief, emphasizing that the loss of Mason was unimaginable, and that they do not want any parent to go through such a tragedy. The driver of the car, Trey Williams, was 17 at the time but has since turned 18, allegedly driving at 56 mph in a 35 mph zone while attempting to overtake another vehicle illegally, which resulted in losing control and trying to avoid a head-on collision. Despite claims that Williams was not intoxicated during the crash, he is now facing adult charges of reckless homicide in Hamilton County court. Murray welcomed the judge's decision, acknowledging that it is just the beginning of seeking justice for Mason, with the next step being an initial hearing in adult court on Monday. The community prosecutor, Josh Kocher, highlighted the significance of this ruling in pursuit of justice for Mason, who was a talented football player with promising potential. Despite concerns about the delay in charging the suspect, it was emphasized that legal proceedings take time. If convicted of Reckless Homicide as a Level 5 Felony, Williams could potentially face a maximum sentence of 6 years in prison.
