
Teen driver kills cyclist in Merced County
A 60-year-old man from Hilmar tragically lost his life after a car struck him while he was riding his bicycle on a rural road in Merced County, according to the California Highway Patrol. The collision occurred late in the evening on Thursday, September 11, near Bloss Avenue, east of Golf Link Road. The man, riding in the westbound direction, had a small red flashing light on the back of his bicycle and a flashlight in the front. The driver, a 16-year-old from Stevenson, was also traveling westbound at approximately 60 miles per hour when he unintentionally hit the bicyclist from behind. Despite the driver's immediate halting, calling 911, and cooperation with investigators, the collision caused fatal injuries to the rider. The incident, in which the teenage driver was found not to be under the influence, is currently being investigated by authorities.
