Tampa City Council talks safety measures post fatal bar crash

Less than a week following a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of four individuals and injuries to thirteen others at a bar, officials in Tampa are deliberating measures to enhance safety for pedestrians and businesses in Ybor City. The Tampa City Council promptly recognized the urgency for action in light of the recent devastating crash on Saturday. District 3 councilwoman Lynn Hurtak stated, "I believe all options should be considered." The community is turning to them for solutions, prompting the review of various proposals suggested. Among these ideas, the installation of bollards, sturdy posts used for security and traffic control, was discussed. These bollards, reminiscent of those used in London after a similar tragic incident on the Westminster Bridge, aim to safeguard both individuals and property from vehicle-related dangers. Additionally, the notion of completely closing 7th Avenue to vehicles was raised as a potential solution. While some advocate for this closure, others argue against it citing a similar situation in Orlando where streets were reopened due to safety concerns. Another proposal involved blocking select entrances to 7th Avenue to deter street racing, a rampant issue in the city. Recognizing the severity of street racing, the officials acknowledge the need for robust solutions. Tampa authorities are encouraging community engagement by urging Police Chief Lee Bercaw to organize public meetings to gather input from residents on preferred solutions. Efforts to solicit feedback from the police department on this initiative are currently underway.
