Oklahoma Highway Patrol investigators have reported in a recent affidavit that a semi-truck driver involved in a fatal turnpike crash has confessed to watching an anime movie on his cell phone at the time of the incident. David Ray Carlson, facing a charge of first-degree manslaughter, explained that he used the anime series for background noise and to stay focused while driving. However, the affidavit also mentions a witness who expressed concerns about Carlson's driving behavior before the accident. Cam footage from the cab and dash cameras showed Carlson struggling to stay in his lane. The tragic accident occurred on August 18 in Ottawa County, near mile marker 315 on the eastbound turnpike. The crash resulted in the death of Oklahoma Turnpike Authority employee Zac Rinehart and injuries to his coworker, Colton Armstrong. Rinehart, a father, husband, and volunteer Vinita firefighter, is fondly remembered by his wife, Danni, who has a tattoo sleeve dedicated to his memory. Distraught by the incident, Danni emphasizes the importance of following traffic laws to ensure everyone's safety. An investigation led by Tulsa attorney Dan Smolen has been initiated to examine various factors, such as drug testing of the driver and the loading of the semi-truck. Carlson's arraignment is scheduled for November 5.
